Fredly's 1990 Diary

Fred's Diary

This is a "Snippet" of Fred's daily life between May 28, 1998, and June 30, 1998

Fred’s Diary is for Senior Citizens only! It is a day to day look at a senior citizen’s daily life - what he does, perhaps what he thinks and perhaps who
knows what. I don’t have a soap box or a personal agenda. Of course I do have personal opinions. It will continue until I get tired of it and/or you get bored with it. So here goes!

Thursday May 28, 1998

Had usual breakfast of bran flakes, banana, and apple and went to Echo Hills Golf course for our usual 7 am tee time with “Red,” Durwood, and Charlie. The first nine wasn’t so hot, but by the second nine I had started to remember some of the basics I first heard about 60 years ago when I first took up this flustering game. Eked out a 91. Had a toasted cheese, with the guys, across the street at the Red Coach Inn. At home, let the dog out for a pee and went to check on my e-mail. Yvonnie is having lunch with Botanical group at Traditions. Laid down for nap at about 2:30 pm and didn’t wake up till 5 pm when Yvonnie opened my door and said “Are you dead” - she knew I usually didn’t nap this long. My tooth, the one which needs a root canal was hurting like the devil - took a pain pill. Yvonnie fixed me some tomato soup and an egg sandwich. She didn’t eat - not being hungry after her Traditions lunch. Called Bingo at Crestview Country Club and Yvonnie won the “late bird” game with 10 numbers so I paid her $60 instead of the usual $30 for having a bingo in 10 numbers or less. Yvonnie brought two pieces of dessert home from the Country Club - peanut butter pie for me, chocolate cake for her. Watched taped “48 Hours” - then off to bed for Yvonnie while I surfed the net till 1:30 am.

Friday May 29, 1998

To lunch with Yvonnie at “Ya - Ya’s” since she won at bingo last nite. To Childrens Miracle Network party at KAKE TV station for those who are involved with CMN. Sheldon Coleman was MC for party. Silent auction - buffet - loud music, Coleman style - people who have been helped by CMN told of help given - Bonnie Bing, Wayne Bryan, Susan Peters, Marian Fell, and the Galloways were there. Small crowd. Bad Food. Outside at back of station under tent - hot. Home in time to watch 20/20. Had to take more pain pills. Rensner, my dentist, sent me to Dr. Mayer for a root canal. Mayer is booked up till 27th of June! The pain and the fact that these pain pills cost $2.75 each are driving me to try to get another dentist that can get me in sooner. Called Rensner for another recommendation for a root canal doctor - but he is on vacation till June 1st. Wish I had a "Mulligan"

Saturday May 30, 1998

To the Farmers Market for veggies and lunch.

*Yvonnie munches down a taco

Got in a nice nap then thought about (but didn't) going down to Candle Club to hear Keith Smith on the piano and get a double Jack Daniels for me and a "virgin" Pina Colota for Yvonnie. She quit drinking 12 years ago, and stopped smoking 4 years ago - if she had a good heart she would last till age 100! - but she doesn't. Could go any time!

Sunday May 30, 1998

Checked e-mail then off to church - University Congregational. As you may or may not know, this is the denomination which questions any and all portions of the bible. Pastor Myers today, took on weather a true and loving God would allow so much suffering in the world. My mother, God rest her soul, being a good "holy roller" would not have liked to hear this message. Instead of our usual breakfast with our friends at Crestview Country Club, Yvonnie and I headed for TV station Channel 10, to answer phones for the Children's Miracle Network when pledges were phoned in. Two pain pills were needed for the tooth problem.

*Ready for the phones to ring !

Monday June 1, 1998

Had to get relief from the tooth pain - could not wait till 27th to get it - Called dentist and told them I was taking $10 worth of pain pills a day and needed some relief. Later a call from told me there was a cancellation for tomorrow that I could have the time slot.

Tuesday June 2, 1998

Golf 7am - 91. Toasted cheese with guys. Dentist at 2:30 for root canal - two hours later it was all over - no fun!! Paid bills. Hot day

Wednesday June 3, 1998

Lions Club - Janice Archibald with her seeing- eye dog was the program - very good.

Thursday June 4, 1998

Golf - 7 am at Echo Hills with the guys (Charlie Ladd, Red Fackler, and Durwood Henricks) - Shot 90. Toasted cheese after at Red Barn Inn. Cold front came through. 50 degrees from start to finish - some sleet and a little rain. Two hour nap. Crestview Country Club to call bingo in the pm. Needed two pain pills today to cut pain in tooth. Hope it settles down soon.

*Estate Sale (high class garage sale)

Friday June 5, 1998

Usual breakfast, checked e-mail, to estate sale with Yvonnie. She found a recliner she wants to buy to replace my old and slightly soiled recliner - and the price is right - how can she pass up this bargain? She can't, she buys the recliner. To PO for stamps To New-Way for lunch and a root beer. To movie, "A Perfect Murder" (good movie) - called Red to help bring new recliner home.

*Sippin a Root Beer

Saturday June 6, 1998

Usual breakfast, checked e-mail. Yvonnie wanted to go to dog races - so she could bet on the Belmont Steaks race. Took Sophie (my cocker spaniel dog) to "Precious Paws" for a bath, then off to the races. I don't believe in giving my money away so I read a magazine while she bet the dogs. Her favorite bet is "two dollars across the board" on a dog whose name fancies her. She lost her $6 on her Belmont Steaks horse.

Sunday June 7, 1998

Usual breakfast. Checked e-mail - one from Scott Amos in Saudi Arabia - he had received my forwarded warning about a virus lurking in an e-mail. He expressed his surprise by sending me an animated pop eyed person with bulging eyes of unbelievable proportions (will send you a copy upon request). At church the Rev. told us that all the recent killings by kids were the result of them seeing too much violence on TV, movies, video games, Etc.;. He had also changed some of the words in "The Lords Prayer." Breakfast at Crestview Country Club with the Amos' and the Borresens. Max Amos was elected to tell the Rev. we did not like his revisions on the prayer. This pm we went to a graduation party for one on Yvonnies friends grandchildren. Very dull. Only one pain pill today. Watched "Tony Awards" on TV - very dull.

Monday June 8, 1998

Worked on web page"Life and times of Fred Hadley" - 1960s link. Yvonnie has cleaning people here today. Four women for 3 hours for $60. A bit steep I thought - but it makes her happy and they did a damn good job on my cruddy shower. Durwood can't play golf tomorrow since his wife, who has Alzheimer's took a turn for the worse with a heart attack and Pneumonia. Light rain.

Tuesday June 9, 1998

Beautiful day. Golf partner "Red" is in Vegas and Durwood is with his sick wife, Charlie and I got around the golf course in 2 hours and 25 minutes - I had an 85 - my putts were sinking. Doug, the renter of my rental property at Crestview, left message that microwave part of stove was not working. Went over and had a look, could not figure out the problem so called repair man who will be out Friday. Brought back, from storage at rental property, my 16mm Bell & Howell movie projector and screen.

Wednesday June 10, 1998

Haircut, then Lions Club. Couldn't take pictures for Lions web page because digital camera battery was dead. Set up 50 year old 16mm movie projector, that I had not used in 10 years to view some 16mm film Chris had given me the last time I was at the lake. I was surprised the projector worked after not having been used for so long a time. The film was 200 feet of some girls he used to know - no porno. Had a nap then to Music Theatre for "Once On This Island." Hard to understand the words or story plot. Below is one of the scenes in the play.

Thursday June 11, 1998

Golf at 7am - 91. Red still in Vegas. Charley and Durwood played. News from Grand Lake that good friend, Bonnie cook, died. Had nice nap. 7pm to Crestview to call bingo. Small crowd - lost money for kitty to buy new Bingo equipment.

Friday June 12

Breakfast, checked e-mail, to Crestview rental to met Microwave repair man. $105 to change faulty electrical connector on microwave.

Saturday June 13

Farmers Market, lunch there. Bill Wainscotts to drop off requested okra from Farmers market. He looked good but he is on experimental program to stop spread of his cancer. Nap, e-mail from Crestview renter giving thanks microwave was fixed but said washer was not working. To Candle Club for Jack Daniels and coke (Virgin Piena-Colata for Yvonnie). Small crowd - Keith Smith.

Sunday June 14

Yvonnie has bad cold. Read paper, usual breakfast, checked e-mail, church. Rev Myers explained the meaning of "The rich get richer and the poor get poorer" as spoke by Jesus. Breakfast at Country Club - was going to go to show but Yvonnie too tired and wanted to rest. Worked with Coral Draw - learning basics. watched part of Buick Golf open, nap, dinner, 60 Minutes, walked the dog, worked on 1960s web page. To Bonnie's funeral tomorrow.

Monday June 15, 1998

Went to Coffeyville to Bonnie Cook's funeral. A lot of Grand Lake people there; Dee, Revis', Bush's, Phillis, Jack Card, Gable's, Howell 's, Wainscott's, Joe and Ila Carman, June, Miller's, Walt, and of course Bonnie's son, Johnnie. Yvonnie didn't go because of her worsening cold. She went to doctors for advice about it. On way home she wasn't paying attention and hit a curb so hard she ruined two rims and tires on right side of her car(78 Buick) which had to be towed.

Johnnie Cook

Tuesday June, 16

Golf at 7am - Durwood not there - had to go to conference about ill wife. Shot a 93 - bad start with an 8. Red brought me back $2 from Vegas - I had given him $1 to invest in a slot machine. Rick's repair man to Saint Cloud rental to repair washer. Replaced knob and reset circuit breaker. Fixed diner for sick Yvonnie - cold worse.

Wednesday June 17

Thursday June 18

Golf at 6:30 am, me and Red made it in 2hours and five minutes. Shot an 85. No bingo tonight. Took Yvonnie to store. None of my three VCR's are working - tried to fix them myself - failed.

Friday June 19

Bought a new VCR from Sears for $109. To get any one of them fixed would probably cost at least $80. Finally figured out how to work it - I had to read the instructions! Made birthday card for Greg.

Saturday June 20

Yvonnie too weak to go to ACAP meeting. Viewed video tape of 1988 Halloween Party, and 1990 Shore Breakfast at Grand Lake and Derby Day party of 1991. Fathers day card from Chris. Nap

Sunday June 21, 1998

Yvonnie too sick with cold to go to church. She ask me to go to McDonald's to get her some pancakes. Her son, Greg, called and wished me a happy fathers day - also Chris called to wish me the same and later in the evening Fred Jr. called. Watched US golf open on TV for 5 hours! No nap. Went for tocas for Yvonnie and I made icebox leftovers for me for dinner. Watched biography of "The Nelson Family" on TV. Sophie didn't want to go for walk - couldn't get her to get off the porch - guess it was too hot for her - even though it was 9pm. Answered Sha-Sha's letter to Philippines.

No Lions Club today since the Lions installation dinner is tomorrow. Chaney's dropped by to see how Yvonnie is and brought two a pieces of rhubarb pie! Nap and more work on FF paper. Pat Royalty invited me to go on FF trip to Capetown, Oct 10. I said ok!

Barber - Gloria Bonnett

Thursday June 25, 1998

Golf 6:30 am - much lightning in area(maybe 3 miles away) got sprinkled on and not hit by lightning. Pat Royalty, my FF exchange leader from my FF "Anywhere" trip to Germany, invited me to go on a FF trip to Capetown Oct 10. I accepted and since I told her Our club had only 10 spaces on our own FF trip to Africa in Nov. and the lottery we held had opted me and others out she ask me to send her the names who wern't going to get to go and she would invite them to go inOctober. My calls to those (except Spackman - since I didn't want to get paired with him because his snoring has kept me awake on two FF trips) resulted in Gillespie, Vincent and Reynolds as being interested (all females). Sent these names to Pat in Atlanta. Sent copy of FF newsletter to Prez Dorothy Orloske for review of any errors, via e-mail. Her return found three - corrected and took masters to printer, who said they would be ready by Monday. Got in 2 hour nap ( I hadn't got to bed this morning till 3 surfing the net) and up at 5:45 am to make the golf tee time. Yvonnie still not feeling well insisted in making a wonderful pork chop dish for supper. Did dishes and headed for Lions Installation Banquet at Shrine Club at 5:30 pm. Took 14 pictures with digital camera of Lions who arrived early for function (for use in Lions web page). Left in an hour so as to not be late at Crestview to call bingo. Since Yvonnie couldn't go with me to bingo - I had to run it by myself. Brought home pie from the club for Yvonnie (had to eat hers and mine since she didn't feel up to but one bite). Watched Jay Leno then an hour putting my Lions shots on my hard disk.

Friday June 26, 1998

Sophie's cough worse and more frequent. She is too fat due to Yvonnie feeding her too much plus giving her lunch meat and table scraps. I have given up on preaching to her about this. Yvonnie got a good nights rest last nite and feels a little better today. Went grocery shopping today so that Yvonnie would not have to get out in the 104 degree heat. She is trying to conserve her strength so she can go to Music Theater on Sunday. Working with Corel 4.0 to learn how to use that great tool for making illustrations - think I have it now! Picked up dinner tonight from Nu - Way.

Saturday June 27, 1998

Yvonnie no better. Fixed her two table spoons of breakfast food and a bite of banana(that is all she would eat). Worked on Lions web page of installation banquet. To Emzy's 60 th wedding anniversary reception at Linwood park.Saw Sandy Reynolds and Ann Vicent there - they said Pat Royalty of FF had called them about Africa trip. Fixed Yvonnie egg sandwich for lunch. Fixed potatoes and chip beef on toast for supper. Last night I gave Sophie small bits of hamburger laced with Rubitission for her cough. Tried same today but she would not eat it - but it does seem she is not coughing so much. Checked e-mail several times today. Watched TV with Yvonnie this pm - then looked at more Corel Draw possibilities.

Emzy and Ruth's 60 th !!

June 28, 1998

Yvonnie a little better, but still not well enough to go to church. Went to McDonald's to get her some pancakes. Worked with Corel 4.0 learning more each day about the software. Nap. Met Durwood down at Century II for Music Theatre production of "State Fair." Yvonnie too weak to go. Good show. e-mail from Masao asking if he could "send Yoko" to me in August. I e-mailed back - sure! She comes to the States each year in connection with the Lobo organization. They teach English all around the world. She teaches English to Japanese people.

Tuesday June 30, 1998

Golf at 6:30 am, Durwood, Red, Charlie. Shot an 86. Toasted cheese afterward. A lot cooler than yesterday - it was 76 when we finished. Yvonnie feeling a lot better - we even had a kiss. Took printed FF newsletter over to Postal Pre Sort. Took extra copies to FF prez Orloske. Called Karen in Luck, Wis to see if she wanted to go on Africa trip - Pat had already called her! Renter sent e-mail saying 2 faucets are leaking and would I get kitchen carpet cleaned. Made arrangements to have both done - could probably do it my self - the faucets - but I hate that sort of job and frequently get bad results and spend a lot of time at it. For a few bucks - let the professionals do it. (I did change out a flushing handle in Yvonnie's bathroom yesterday, cracked the water closet(trying to get the old handle off), above the water line, glued it back together and so far it is holding. Two hour nap and then to the deli for food for dinner. Sophie bothersome with her horse cough and frequently peeing in the house. I think Yvonnie is hinting we should put her down.

*Photos will be added when I locate them
